The Many Facets of Rachel

Season 1 Episode 8 | Nov 28, 2023
Rachel Fishwick, Phoebe du Maurier

It's time to go on a very personal journey with this podcast's veritable co-host, Rachel, a mechanical engineer, mother, and transgender woman. In this talk Rachel gave to her workplace during Transgender Awareness Week, she discusses her transition during the COVID-19 pandemic, the challenges she faced, and the effects on her relationships at home and at work. Rachel's story offers an enlightening look into the struggles, triumphs, and resilience of the transgender community.

Rachel also talks about the rise of anti-trans rhetoric in the media, particularly its devastating consequences on the transgender community, highlighting the government's anti-trans policies, which have sparked controversy and fuelled discrimination. These policies have resulted in an increase in hate crimes against trans individuals and exacerbated the already high rates of depression and suicide within the community.

Rachel also emphasises the urgent need for allies to speak out against transphobia and provided practical ways for listeners to lend their support. Allies can demonstrate their support through small but meaningful actions, such as using correct pronouns, avoiding invasive questions, and creating safe spaces for open dialogue.

Rachel’s journey to self-discovery and acceptance was fraught with obstacles. Her resilience in the face of adversity, however, is truly inspiring. Coming out in a heterosexual, male-dominated workplace was not an easy feat. She shares with great candour the challenges she faced, from misgendering to transphobia.

Rachel's story underscores the urgent need for societal understanding and acceptance of the transgender community. By sharing her experiences, she says she has hopes to inspire others to embrace their authentic selves and promote a culture of respect and inclusion. In Rachel’s words, love should be unconditional, and it is okay to be yourself.

The conversation on trans rights and experiences is far from over. Each story, like Rachel’s, adds to the narrative, fostering understanding, and acceptance. It is our joint responsibility, trans people and allies alike, to continue the conversation, challenge transphobia, and support the community. After all, acceptance and understanding are key to building a more inclusive society.
